Samuel Solow - Part 2
Samuel Solow - Part 2
My co-grandfather Howard Stein just sent me some interesting historical documents regarding his great grandfather Samuel Solow. Lots of new details about his emigration from New York to what was then Palestine. Below is Samuel's passport photo from his US passport application in March, 1921 (age 72). Samuel moved (alone) to Palestine on May 5, 1925 and became a naturalized citizen of Palestine in 1935. He lived in Tel Aviv until his death in 1939 (age 90). Note: from 1922 to 1948 Palestine was administered by Great Britain. The United Nations partitioned Palestine into Jewish and Arab states in 1947.

"I don't remember whether I sent this on to you last year. But this is documentation (in the attachment) of Samuel Solow's time in Israel and some of his history. It shows he went there in the mid 1920's; I had thought 1930s. It gives two of his addresses in Tel Aviv and various and sundry other information. I don't understand it all, especially the cross-outs; it may be that in applying for citizenship the form assumes the applicant intends to include his wife and children, but in Samuel's case that was not accurate."
"Note that my middle name is Samuel. The family had very mixed feelings about Samuel, loving but very unhappy about his leaving (but not abandoning) his family to move to Israel."
Many of the documents are in Hebrew. Here is one of the English immigration documents, dated 25 January, 1935.
