Where have all the Colnagos Gone?

Where have all the Colnagos Gone?

Our great grandfather Col. Ferdinand was a Colnago.  I wondered where other Colnagos might be living.  Well, I found out there aren't a lot of Colnagos in Austria.

Great grandfather Ferdinand Colnago was born in Obrovazzo, Dalmatia (1863).  It is now Obrovac, Croatia.  Not too far from Split.  There are still Colnagos in Croatia, and their number has doubled in the last half century.  Here is a map of Colnagos in Croatia today.  There are 10 in Zagreb and 15 in Split.  I guess some of those in Split may be related to Ferdinand (and me) somehow.

Finally I found lots of Colnagos!  Here they are!  In northern Italy!

Here is the location of all the Colnagos around the world.  Yup.  Mostly in Italy.

Next I thought of looking for Kordesches in Austria.  (My paternal grandfather is Viktor Kordesch). There are a few of them of them in southern Austria, and a few in Germany. The Kordesches mostly live in Carinthia!
  1. Carinthia = 43
  2. Vorarlberg = 3
  3. Upper Austria = 2
  4. Styria = 2
  5. Vienna = 2

OK, then I looked for "Böhm." (My maternal grandfather was Franz Böhm).
Looks like there are LOTS of Böhms, especially in northern Austria.

It's fun to play with these maps.
Names like "Beham" in Austria are here:  http://www.locatemyname.com/austria/Beham

Note: Surnames do disappear over time (Galton–Watson process) and new surnames appear (new names are often created during immigration).

There are many other surname distribution maps, here is a list from Wikipedia.  Have fun.

    Hi Stefan!
Haha, Yes! Thanks, I forgot about the Colnago bicycles. I looked on their website and they started in 1954.
